Training Opportunities

It has taken a while to get going, but at long last, the revised Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Angling Award is now available for those who want to become assistant coaches. It is designed to precede Level 2, but can also be taken by those people who just want a basic angling qualification that will allow them to help at fishing days, or help a qualified instructor in schools etc. It is not an award that allows you to coach angling on your own.

It takes place over two days, with a period of time between each to allow for consolidation of knowledge and skills. The Level 1 course does not teach technical skills (how to cast) but assumes that applicants will be able to demonstrate a simple, safe overhead cast and roll cast. The course includes sessions on carrying out risk assessments, coaching ethics, coaching and learning skills and planning activities. It is assessed through written tasks, observations and a short written paper.
The cost of the award will be between £150 and £180.

The Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Angling continues to be popular, with another twenty one coaches qualifying so far this year. The technical casting assessment (GAIAC) continues to be a little daunting for some people, but with a few lessons from an APGAI instructor and plenty of practice, it soon becomes achievable. As the saying goes ‘you reap what you sow’

Recently eight of the APGAI assessors who work with the Level 2 candidates have undertaken their own training and are on their way to complete a City & Guilds L20 (Expert Witness) award.

Training at all levels in the coaching world is important, we need to keep up to date with new coaching methods and casting techniques. To this end, two one day courses are being run in October for Game Angling coaches, one at Eyebrook Reservoir and the other at Roadford Reservoir. Information can be found on the GAIA website for those that are interested.

2007 will see the continued development of the Level 3 Coaching in Angling Award and it should be ready to deliver in Spring 2008.

Level 2 CCA (Level 2 Certificate Coaching Angling) Has been introduced in line with government objectives to standardise qualifications and introduce licencing throughout all sports. The initiative involves the Governing Bodies of Game Angling, Coarse and Sea Angling. Its introduction replaces the issuing of new STANIC and SGAIC certificates, these qualifications remain fully recognised and relevant for licencing. Level 2 CCA is issued in the disciplines of "Trout & Sea Trout" and "Salmon". For more information double click on the menu link

STANIC (Salmon & Trout Association National Instructors Certificate) is no longer issued, the Level 2 CCA qualification having taken its place. The qualification remains fully recognised and is an accepted qualification for licencing. STANIC was issued in the disciplines of "Trout & Sea Trout", "Salmon" & "Flydressing".
